her story

In 2010, I was officially diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. After being rushed into a major emergency surgery I found out this illness had gone undiagnosed for ten years. With any major medical procedure, especially surgery, my recovery was going to take twelve weeks. Twelve weeks without work to keep money coming in to pay my bills. At that time, I was not in the financial position to supplement my income and after  eight weeks of no work, I found myself in the same position as many other Americans. I was in need of financial assistance for basics like food and other necessities.

Like many other people, the impact of my financial situation started to take its toll on me. I sought help for my mental health and financial health. I reached out to several financial assistance programs in hopes of getting some relief. However, because of my status of being ‘employed’ and ‘middle-class’, I did not qualify and was denied. Learning I would need to lose my vehicle and exhaust my savings, which at that time, was  only  $82, I became desperate. I had no choice but to convince my doctor to approve my  return to work. Even though we both knew I wasn’t fully healed. Unfortunately, it was my only option.

My story is not unique and five years later I was able to start providing financial relief to individuals and families experiencing similar unforeseen situations. It has been a rewarding experience to  provide funds for  utility bills, groceries, gas and other necessities through my organization. To date, I have been able to assist multiple families with paying for their housing and utilities. My organization’s goal is not only to provide financial relief to others who have had similar stories but to educate. Resile One will provide education and other resources to assist individuals and families prepare for financial hardships that may result from a medical emergency.
